Soweto's Newest Change-Makers Are Here: Meet the SRCC!

On September 28, 2024, Soweto took a bold step toward community empowerment with the official launch of the Soweto Rotary Community Corps (SRCC). The chartering event at Lebo's Soweto Backpackers brought together around 40 attendees, including local leaders, Rotarians, and community members, all united by one goal: building a better Soweto through service.

For those unfamiliar, a Rotary Community Corps (RCC) is a community-based group that partners with Rotary clubs, empowering locals to tackle their own issues through service projects. The SRCC is now the second RCC in Soweto, a testament to Rotary’s growing commitment to supporting this vibrant community.

The event kicked off with a stirring address by Rotary District Governor George Senosha, who praised the RCC model for fostering local leadership. He expressed his optimism for the lasting impact the SRCC will have on Soweto. The highlight of the event came when Karlien Kruger, President of the Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn, officially presented the Rotary International Certificate of Organization to newly appointed SRCC Chairperson Carol Dyantyi.

Carol Dyantyi, a well-known figure in Soweto’s development scene, gave a heartfelt speech about the importance of Rotary’s values and the work ahead for the SRCC. She made it clear that the RCC would focus on pressing local challenges, particularly youth development and environmental issues.

The event, set against the picturesque backdrop of Lebo's Soweto Backpackers, was filled with music from local African bands and a lunch inspired by local flavors. The SRCC also announced the launch of its Keep Kasi Klean initiative, aiming to transform illegal dumpsites into green spaces by 2026.

With their chartering behind them, the Soweto RCC is ready to make real change, one project at a time.
